Biography / Bibliography
Richard Bernard
Richard Bernard was a moderate Calvinist Puritan, who flirted with nonconformity during the reigns of James I and Charles I. He briefly entered communion with a separatist church, before returning to regular service and publishing admonitions of the non-conformists. Nonetheless, he frequently found himself at odds with specific points of practise of faith, such as making the sign of the cross during baptism, which Bernard refused to do. Bernard managed to avoid damaging his reputation, such that he could continue to write rather prolifically throughout his career, with numerous devotional pieces and tracts on biblical study issued during his lifetime and posthumously.
