Here in the First Edition rebound in Fine Half Sheep with marbled boards. Four Volumes. Ordinary paper issue. Sadly incomplete, lacking the General Title Page for Volume II. Else complete, with the Frontispiece portrait in Volume I engraved by G. Vertue and the six plates of coins.

The volume(s) measure about 25 cm. by 20 cm. by 3.8 cm.

Each leaf measures about 240 mm. by 190 mm.

The Full Title Reads:

The Works of the Right Honourable Joseph Addison, Esq; In four volumes. Volume One (Two – Four). London: Printed for Jacob Tonson at Shakespear’s Head over-against Katharine street in the Strand. MDCCXXI (1721)

Pagination:  Vol 1; [2], [xxiv], 559, Vol II; [6 – lacking one leaf], 583. Vol III; [1], 624. Vol IV; [1], 5-6, 3-4, 7-594,[18]. 4to. Ordinary paper issue; the headpiece on p. 3 of vol. 1 shows an urn on a pedestal.

Bound in half sheep with marbled boards. Binding in Fine like new condition. Binding is quite supple and the books may be easily read. The leaves are generally clean with minor foxing and browning in places. The last leaf of Vol II has a closed tear repaired from the back.  4to.

Volumes 1, 3 & 4; The Volumes measure 25 x 20 x 3.8 cm. Each leaf measures 240 x 190 mm.

Volume 2; The volume measures 25 x 21.5 x 5 cm. Each leaf measures 240 x 205 mm.

Volume 2 is a Large Paper copy trimmed to match the height of the ordinary paper volumes. The gutter measures in at 3.2cm.

Published just two years after Addison’s death. Samuel Johnson, who greatly admired his writing, declared “Whoever wishes to attain an English style, familiar, but not coarse, and elegant but not ostentatious, must give his days and nights to the volumes of Addison.”
