Of Joseph Hall

Editions of Hall’s Works

In 1615 Hall published A Recollection of such treatises as have been published (1615, 1617, 1621); in 1625 appeared his Works (our copy) (reprinted 1627, 1628, 1634, 1662). Volume Two of His Works appeared in 1634 (our copy) and Volume Three in 1662 (our copy).

The fame of Joseph Hall rests on the broad sweep of his writings from his early satirical pieces to his meditation and devotional pieces. Fuller called him the English Seneca for his pure, plain, and full style. The substantive works on religion and controversy are contained in The Collected Works, outlining Hall’s support of Episcopacy and denying the authority of the Papacy, alongside extensive satire, meditations and devotional pieces.

Hall is credited for several literary genres, and has been regarded as a master of satire. While Milton criticized his writings others such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift, found Hall’s works to be to be amongst the best poetry and authentic satire in the English language.
