Of The Stag Chase

Having little in the way of real hunting imagery, The Stag Chase by Richard Powney is a direct political allegory, in imitation of the much less overt The Chase, by William Somerville. Powney uses the motifs of hunting to glorify Prince Frederick and his followers in politics against the influences of Robert Walpole. Thus Powney espouses the members of the Whig party who felt betrayed by the Policies of Britain’s first Prime Minister.
