The full titles read as follows:

“The Pic Nic Papers. By Various Hands. Edited By Charles Dickens, Esq. Author of ‘The Pickwick Papers,” “Nicholas Nickleby,” &c. With Illustrations By George Cruikshank, Phiz, &c. In three Volumes. Vol. I. [II.], [III.]. London: Henry Colburn, Publisher, Great Marlborough Street. MDCCCXLI [1841]”

The Volumes are Complete in All Respects with fourteen plates, three of which are set as frontispieces for each volume. Additionally, the original cloth spines have been pasted onto a final blank in each volume.

The volumes are paginated as follows:

Vol. I; [iii]-vi-[viii], [1]-323.

Vol. II.; [iv], [1]-298 .

Vol. III.; [ii], [3]-378.

The volumes collate as follows:

Vol. I; [A]4, B-D12, E6, F-P12.

Vol. II.; [A]2B-N12, O6.

Vol. III.; [A]1B-Q12, R8, S1.

The Volumes are in Good to Very Good Condition in a Later Gilt ruled calf binding, re-backed, retaining the gilt stamped spine divided into six compartments by five raised bands, with a red morocco letter-piece in the second compartment from the top, and brown volume label in the third, and with the board edges, turn-ins and leaf edges gilt. Externally the hinges have been repaired, the board corners bumped a bit, and with some chipping to the head and tails of the spine. Internally the leaves are generally clean and well margined, with the initial binder’s blanks of volumes I. & II. detached, with some faint foxing or toning on occasion, most severely at the final plate of the third volume, and with little in the way of stains or tears.

Of The Pic-Nic Papers

In 1841 the three-volume anthology titled The Pic-Nic Papers was published, composed of miscellaneous pieces by various authors. It was originated by Dickens to benefit the widow and children of 28-year-old publisher John Macrone, who died suddenly in 1837. Dickens had begun soliciting submissions in 1838, and he eventually contributed the “Introduction” and one short story “The Lamplighter’s Story”. Other contributors included William Harrison Ainsworth, Thomas Moore, Leitch Ritchie and Agnes Strickland. Macrone’s widow eventually received 450 pounds from this charitable publication.
