Illustrated with about a Hundred Heads, of the Worthy Royalists and other Principal Actors; drawn from the Original Paintings of Vandike, An. More, Dobson, Cor. Johnson, and other Eminent Painters; and Engrav’d by the best modern Artists; as appears by their Names in the List annex’d to the First Volume. Useful for all that have, or shall buy the Lord Clarendon, or other historians of those times. In three volumes. The two first end with the murder of King Charles I. The Third ends with the Restoration of King Charles II. To which is added an Appendix of several valuable tracts, refer’d to by the Lord Clarendon, Sir R. Baker, T. Hobbs of Malms. The volumes collate: Vol I; A-A6, a-a8, B-O8, Vol II, )(2, P-2F8, 2G2, Vol III; )(, 2G2-2G4, 2H8-3G8. Last leaf is blank.

First Edition. Complete with 84 out of 85 plates present as usual, plus 15 extra illustrated plates, 3 maps and the blank last leaf in Vol III. The plate of the Earl of Lindsay is listed as present, however the National Portrait Gallery does not contain a copy of this plate, indicating none were produced. Other sets also lack this plate.

Reissued in 1715 in two volumes: the first, with Ward’s name on the titlepage, contains the text of his poem, the second has a titlepage reading “The Lord Clarendon’s history of the grand rebellion compleated.

All three volumes are bound in full panelled 19th century calf. The boards in fine shape, with some scuffing to the spines. The spines in six compartments with five raised bands, with a red lettering piece in the second compartment from the top and a volume number beneath.

Internally fine with little in the way of stains or foxing. Some browning to the odd plate. Map of Ireland with a closed tear.

This most ambitious project, rendering Clarendon’s History into verse, was said to cost well over 500 pounds to produce. Unfortunately, it met with little success. As the volumes were also intended to be a companion to Clarendon’s 1712 80 set, many were broken up and the plates added to Clarendon’s set.

Ward himself later described the venture as ‘an unprecedented poem. troublesome, tedious, and unprofitable’.
