Biography / Bibliography
Of John Abernethy
John Abernathy was a popular and influential physician from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, best known today for his digestive “Abernethy Biscuits.” While his written works are not generally considered to be especially well written, he nonetheless advanced understanding of diseases and the importance of digestion, with his ‘Essay on the constitutional Origin of Local Disease’. The essay was first seen in a less finished form in the second part of his Surgical Observations, published in 1806. The final version would be included in his 1811 ‘Observations’ and according to the Dictionary of National Biography, was still relevant at the end of the nineteenth century, and held significant influence over surgical practice.
