A Papist Not Misrepresented

The Volume is in Very Good Condition bound in full panelled contemporary vellum, with the spine divided into nine compartments by eight gilt bands, with the leaf edges gilt. Externally the vellum shows some spotting and light warping, with a damp-stain at the edge that does not affect the contents. Internally the leaves are clean and broadly margined, with some mild staining or foxing at the leaf edges.

Part of the public feud started by John Gother. John Gother’s work, A Papist Misrepresented and Represented, lists at length commonly held errors as to Catholic doctrine and practice. All such errors are duly “refuted” in the manner of the time, but courteously and in an English style that was well regarded.

Using a two column format to show the mis-representation and representation, followed by a longer passage explaining the correct representation. It drew out no lesser an opponent than Edward Stillingfleet, a staunch defender of Anglican orthodoxy, and one of the prolific writers associated with Gilbert Burnett. He responds with The Doctrines and Practices of the Church of Rome Truly Represented, a very academically fueled reply, respectful in tone and thorough in refutation. Gother s reply, Reflections Upon the Answer to the Papist Mis-Represented, remains civil in it s approach, admitting his mis-represented papist was born of his ignorance of the more scholarly protestant opinions, yet nonetheless standing by his assertion of the true nature of Catholic faith.

This again elicited a response, again straining the point of politeness, but now with William Sherlock taking to the press with A Papist Not Misrepresented by Protestants, (our copy in Presentation Binding) again insisting on the Protestant turn away from Papal practises. Gother would eventually have to flee to Rome during the glorious revolution, and from there sent to Lisbon, to take up the post of President of the English College.
